District One primary schools clashed recently in the 2023 District One Primary Schools’ Athletics Meet, competing for honours, bragging rights, and trophies and medals sponsored by RUBIS, St. Lucia.
The event, held by the District One Sports Office, took place on Friday 3 March, 2023, at the Darren Sammy Cricket Grounds in Beausejour, Gros Islet. It saw competition among a number of primary schools including Balata, Boguis, Fond Assau, Dame Pearlette Louisy, Babonneau, Des Barras, Grande Riviere, Gros Islet, La Guerre, Monchy and the Montessori Centre.
Students won medals and prizes valued at EC$1,140 in three age categories, the under-9 boys and girls, under-11 boys and girls, and under-13 boys and girls.
In her appreciation address, Sports Coordinator Melissa John, thanked RUBIS, stating, “On behalf of the District Education Officer, Principals, Teachers, Staff, and students of education District One, I would like to say a heartfelt thank you for your generous contribution towards our District One Primary Schools’ Athletics Meet 2023.”
Chriselda Norbal, Accounts Executive for RUBIS, who also attended the event, highlighted the important link between sports and youth development.
“RUBIS is a very keen supporter of youth development and sports; and we are very happy to be a part of this District One primary schools athletics meet, especially after such an extended hiatus. We believe in the youth, and in sports as a way to develop and help them grow. Sports is an important part of the life of our youth, as it fsters mental health, new connections and develops young leaders,” Norbal said.
Following the keen competition, the District awarded winners of the individual races, and all 11 schools that competed, received a certificate of participation.
