Interns grasping RUBIS opportunity

Ten eager interns were welcomed to RUBIS Barbados’ head office on June 10, 2024. They were all excited to get started on their assignments so they could develop new abilities and get real-world experience that will aid them in their future professions. The intern group is made up of students from both local and international universities who are pursuing bachelor’s and master’s degrees in various disciplines.

During the 10 weeks of the internship, the interns will be assigned to various departments, including Sales and Marketing, Operations, Legal, and Finance. This approach will allow the interns to gain hands-on experience in their selected area of study.

The interns were exposed to an informative orientation during the first week, which included key insights into the operational aspects of RUBIS as well as interesting table talks with department heads. There were three tours during the week: Grantley Adams International Airport, Barbados National Terminal Company Ltd. (BNTCL), and a fueling station. First on the agenda was a visit to the Sunset Crest RUBIS service station, during which the interns learned how critical the roles performed by the RTW driver are when delivering Ultra Tec gasoline and diesel to the service stations. The next tour was at Barbados National Terminal Company Ltd. (BNTCL), which was a walkthrough of the facility, including how they distribute product through the underground pipelines, testing of the product, and the process of the RTW drivers collecting the product and delivering it to the various service stations. During the last tour at Grantley Adams International Airport, the interns observed how products are received from BNTCL through the underground pipelines and the process of fueling the planes. These three tours gave the interns an overview of the fuel journey from supplier to consumer.

The orientation week also included the interns receiving two life skills: CPR and First Aid, and fire safety. CPR and First Aid training was done at the Spring Garden terminal, which all the interns successfully passed, and they became trained practitioners of these lifesaving techniques. Fire safety training took place at Barbados Fire Academy in Arch Hall, St. Thomas, where they learned how to use a fire extinguisher correctly.

As they go through their journey with us, we will document and share their accomplishments as they happen. Stay tuned to our social media platforms, where we will regularly update you on their accomplishments and impact on our organization.

Each year, our internship program offers tertiary-level students an opportunity to acquire practical experience and useful skills in the workplace. With 10 interns joining us this summer, we cannot wait to see how they excel and contribute to our organization.
