RUBIS Guyana donates games to encourage youth engagement

RUBIS is supporting the development of key leadership and life skills amongst Guyana’s youth.

The company recently donated GYD$300,700 in board games and puzzles to the Specialists in Sustained Youth Development and Research Incorporated Inc. (SSYDR), a local not-for-profit organisation. It is planned that the gift will support the organisation’s Youth Club which will be launched in Georgetown in April, with plans to open another location in approximately three weeks in Berbice. The Club will cater to young persons ages 14 to 30.

Over the last five years, SSYDR has worked directly with approximately 3000 young persons, assisting them in developing leadership qualities and life skills through training, coaching and mentoring. The objective is to foster a sense of purpose and reduce the incidence of crime, violence and poverty in the community.   The training programs provide networking support to the young people via WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger even after the training is completed, as a follow-up and sustainable approach to keeping them engaged

Joylyn Johnson, RUBIS Accounts Executive explained that RUBIS was pleased to play their part to encourage the positive development of Guyana’s youth. She said, “Outside of the games being used to develop their analytical and problem solving skills, we anticipate it will build camaraderie in a fun-filled way among members. Our hope is that using games as a simple method to build skillsets will create a positive learning environment in which the young persons can blossom and grow to be responsible citizens of Guyana.

In accepting the gift, Magda Fiona Wills, Founder/Executive Director of the program said, “SSYDR is extremely delighted and thankful for the support provided by RUBIS for the upcoming launch of the SSYDR Youth Club.”  She added, “The Club is geared towards bringing youth together in a fun, safe space where they can gather to network, learn and experience growth.”
