Team RUBIS Spreads Holiday Cheer with the Annual Food Basket Initiative in Sandy Bay and Owia

This holiday season, the lives of seniors and vulnerable citizens in the Sandy Bay and Owia communities were touched as Team RUBIS continued its tradition of spreading joy and cheer through the annual Food Basket drive, as well as a heartfelt donation of essential items to the Thompson Home. Valued at USD $5,889 (XCD $16,000), these donations reflect RUBIS’ unwavering commitment to uplifting and supporting its communities.

Led by Country Representative Elroy Edwards, this 10th annual outreach distributed 50 food baskets to some of the community’s most vulnerable members, including the elderly and people with disabilities.

The Country Representative delivered an inspiring message regarding societal responsibility.

“Generally, I believe we can all be more sensitive to the needs of our fellowmen and better neighbours to each other. Sometimes, we take too much for granted and forget to show that sense of care. This holiday season provided another wonderful opportunity for us as a company to embrace our corporate responsibility of loving and caring for the elderly and marginalised,” Edwards said.

Among the recipients expressing heartfelt gratitude for the thoughtful gesture was Eddie Nero, 92, the oldest man in Owia, who said he appreciated the joy it brought to his household. Visually impaired Elford Williams, 82, remarked that the support would significantly ease his family’s financial burden during the season.

For Ceva Baptiste, who cares for her ailing husband, the assistance was “more than a relief”. Joyce Williams, 77, who lost her home to Hurricane Beryl, shared her deep emotion, noting it was her first relief item since the disaster. Monica Henry, another recipient, was overwhelmed with gratitude, expressing her wish to remember the RUBIS team in her prayers.

Keeta Williams, a local teacher who played a crucial role in identifying those most in need, commended RUBIS for demonstrating genuine care and love for the community.

Commenting on the donation of essential supplies to the Thompson Home, Williams said it demonstrated the importance of compassion during the holiday season.

“Our aim is to provide a better quality of life for the most vulnerable, and we believe that every elderly person deserves access to basic necessities to ensure their well-being.”

The Country Representative also lauded the RUBIS team and community volunteers for their dedication as they braved inclement weather to ensure the success of the 2024 food basket initiative.
