RUBIS Barbados Welcomes 2025 Intern Cohort with a Week of Learning, Connection, and Fun

On June 16, 2025, RUBIS Barbados proudly welcomed seven talented interns to our team as part of this year’s summer internship program. The group includes students who have completed or are actively pursuing Bachelor’s degrees and certifications in various disciplines. Throughout the 10-week program, they will gain valuable hands-on experience in the IT, Marketing, Finance, Procurement, and Operations departments at the Main Office in Welches and the Spring Garden Terminal.

To support their development and integration into the company, each intern was paired with a mentor, a RUBIS employee, who would help guide them through their journey, provide insight, and serve as a key point of support throughout the program.

The internship began with a dynamic and immersive orientation week, designed to provide a solid foundation in RUBIS’ operations, culture, and safety standards.

Industry Immersion Through Tours

Interns toured three significant locations critical to RUBIS Barbados’ operations:

  • Spring Garden Terminal – They received a walkthrough of the tank farms and learnt about the LPG management process.
  • Barbados National Energy Company Ltd. (BNECL) – The group explored how fuel is stored and managed, including the use of underground pipelines and safety protocols. Following the journey of fuel from the time ships are docked in Oistins to distribution across service stations island-wide.
  • Grantley Adams International Airport – Here, the interns saw the aviation fueling process in action, observing how fuel is delivered and used to power aircraft.

“Learning about the inner workings of BNECL and G.A.I.A was truly a fascinating experience. Visiting these organizations and gaining insight into how their operations and departments interconnect revealed the remarkable level of synergy required to drive such a large-scale system. It was both eye-opening and inspiring.”
Jaedyn Cupid, IT Intern

These experiences gave the interns a complete view of the fuel and LPG supply chains, from ocean arrival to on-island distribution, building context for their upcoming departmental roles.

Building Life Skills

During the week, all interns completed CPR and First Aid training, receiving official certificates. These critical life-saving skills are a part of RUBIS Barbados’ commitment to promoting a culture of safety and preparedness across all levels of the organisation.

Insights and Mentorship

Throughout the week, interns also engaged in table talks with employees from various departments, gaining firsthand insights into the diverse roles, responsibilities, and career paths within the company. These conversations allowed interns to better understand RUBIS’ organisational structure and how different functions contribute to overall operations.

“During orientation, I had the opportunity to meet my mentor in the Accounts and Finance department, which provided valuable insight into the team’s operations and what I can look forward to learning. Meeting different members of staff across departments also made the environment feel welcoming and open.”
Nathan Moore, Finance Intern

Team Bonding with a Twist

To wrap up an exciting first week, the interns visited Real Escape Barbados at Tyrol Cot Heritage Village, where they tackled team-building challenges and interactive games designed to strengthen their budding connections. The main activity was a high-energy escape room experience that tested their communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills under pressure.

“The highlight of the week for me was the escape room team bonding activity. It was the perfect way to end a week full of new information, tours, and introductions.”
Jade Alleyne, Procurement Intern

“Being put into a fun, fast-paced challenge with the other interns allowed us to connect on a different level. We had to collaborate, think creatively, and trust each other to solve the puzzles and make it out in time (which we did eventually!).”
Sarah Henry, Marketing Intern

The activity served as more than just entertainment; it helped turn a group of strangers into a cohesive team ready to tackle the rest of their internship experience together.

A Balanced Start

Overall, orientation week struck the perfect balance of learning, connection, and fun. From gaining operational insights and life skills to forming professional relationships and friendships, the interns are off to a promising start.

We’re excited to see how they grow, contribute, and thrive over the coming weeks. Stay tuned to our social media platforms for regular updates on their journey and achievements.
