Suriname’s Action for Women Foundation’s basketball programme has scored a USD 2,200 assist from Team RUBIS as it seeks to inspire young girls to achieve higher success despite their humble beginnings.
The funding from RUBIS Suriname was presented to Chairwoman Ms. Soesman during a warm and engaging visit to the Action for Women Foundation on April 1st. The Action for Women Foundation empowers young girls from disadvantaged communities in the Commewijne district through basketball.
“This contribution helps us keep our mission alive—giving girls the chance to grow, both on and off the court,” said Ms. Soesman. “It’s about more than basketball. It’s about building confident, capable young women who can thrive in life.”
The Action for Women Foundation supports 42 girls between the ages of 7 and 19, providing them with access to structured basketball training and opportunities to compete under the Suriname Basketball Association (SBA). Through their involvement in the sport, the girls improve their physical health and learn essential life skills like leadership, communication, discipline, and teamwork.
Ms. Soesman said the foundation’s key challenge is the cost of transporting the girls to and from games and training sessions. Although a 30-seat bus facilitates this, the modest contributions from families are not enough to fully cover operational costs. RUBIS’ donation helps to fill this gap, enabling the foundation to maintain its programming and ensure that no girl is left behind due to financial barriers.
RUBIS Suriname’s Sales Manager, Euan Irving, expressed the company’s strong belief in the importance of community-driven initiatives like this one. “It is a great privilege for us to contribute to such a meaningful project,” he said. “The drive and potential of these young, talented girls truly inspires us. We hope they continue chasing their dreams and developing the life skills that will carry them far beyond the basketball court.”
This initiative is part of RUBIS Suriname’s broader commitment to corporate social responsibility, particularly in youth development, education, and community support. By investing in the Action for Women Foundation, RUBIS is helping to create a safe and empowering space where young girls can thrive—both as athletes and as future leaders in their communities.
