RUBIS Suriname Supports Local Animal Welfare Efforts with Donation on World Stray Animals Day

Paramaribo, Suriname – April 4, 2025 – In observance of World Stray Animals Day, RUBIS Suriname donated USD $1,000 to local animal shelter Help Save Animals Suriname (HSAS). The donation was presented on April 4th by Country Representative Angelique Tjang-A-Sjin at the shelter’s location on Sir Winston Churchillweg, just minutes from the RUBIS Terminal.

Founded on February 21, 2023, Help Save Animals Suriname is the result of the compassion and dedication of Dutch-born entrepreneur Isabella de Boer-Buurman. After moving to Suriname in 1997 and building a successful family business, Isabella was deeply moved by the plight of stray animals in the area. Her shelter now provides temporary refuge, medical care, and rehoming services for dogs and cats in need.

During the handover, Isabella questioned why an international fuel company would support an animal shelter. In response, Angelique Tjang-A-Sjin shared the personal and corporate values that drive RUBIS’ community involvement:

“At our terminal on Putcherweg 45, we’re familiar with the challenges of stray animals. A female dog currently resides on our property, and rather than treat her as a nuisance, we care for her. She’s become part of our team—alert and loyal, even accompanying security during night patrols.

A few months ago, I found a puppy abandoned in a box. HSAS stepped in and turned that scared little pup into an adoptable companion. In another instance, a severely injured stray—now known as ‘Putcher’—was rescued after being hit by a car. Today, she lives safely at the shelter. Supporting HSAS means supporting humane treatment for animals, and we’re proud to be a part of that effort.”

RUBIS Suriname commends the shelter’s unwavering commitment to animal welfare and is proud to contribute to its mission. Through this donation, the company aims to inspire other businesses and individuals to support or adopt animals in need.
